Before you leave home, it's worth contacting the
Jamaica
Tourist Board(JTB),
which will send out brochures on the main tourist
attractions, schedules of events, accommodation listings
and a good road
map. Once in Jamaica, you can get the same information
from JTB desks at the Kingston
and Montego
Bay airports,
and JTB offices in the main towns.
Jamaica has no
entertainment listings magazine , so to find out what's
going on, you have to rely on the radio (particularly Irie FM),
newspapers, and flyers and
banners
posted up around the towns. The best road
map is Discover
Jamaica, distributed free by JTB offices abroad
and on the island.

You should decide which area interests you the most, then go from there. I've not yet been to Port Antonio, but I know it's a relatively small, undeveloped area...quite a drive from the MoBay airport, but not so bad from Kingston. Here's a few quick tidbits on each area to get you started...Negril...about 2 hours West of Montego Bay...very casual and cool...great nightlife and most known for it's beautiful sandy 7 mile beach...if you're looking to get off the resort and party, this is the spot.Montego Bay...A great thing about MoBay is that you don't have to drive far from the airport. I personally don't care for MoBay as it's more of a "city" feel...crowded and congested, but there are some great beaches, lots of shopping and good party spots.Runaway Bay Area...about 1.5 hours East of MoBay on the North coast. There are some nice resorts here and a few more scattered along the North coast. Until a few years ago, Runaway Bay was kind of a sleepy fishing village...starting to take off, but nowhere near the development of Negril, MoBay or Ochee. Great if you don't want to be in town...if you want to stay on the resort save for a few excursions.Ocho Rios...(Ochee) is about 2 hours East of MoBay. This is where a lot of cruise ships dock and it's a fairly bustling tourist town. There's a lot to do in Ochee and a lot of nice resorts.Treasure Beach, Black River...South Coast...More like 2.5-3 hours from MoBay...A mostly undeveloped area. If you're looking for a more genuine Jamaica experience, this might be the ticket...much more of a desert feel than the lush North coast. There are only a couple large resorts, but several villas, botique hotels, etc.
